Applying Wellness

Wellbeing - Fitness - In-Shape - Wholeness - Strength - Vigor

The state or condition of being in good physical and mental health. An active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. An active deliberate effort and sought out goal for the achievement and maintenance of proper diet, exercise and healthy habits.

Wellness centers are opening everywhere. Wellness programs are becoming the norm within corporate benefit programs. Although there might be different views on what wellness encompasses, the National Wellness Institute--along with the help of leaders in health and wellness--shared many interpretations and models of wellness.

Through this discussion, there appears to be general agreement that:

• Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential

• Wellness is multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment

• Wellness is positive and affirming

The definition of wellness, long used by the National Wellness Institute is consistent with these tenets. Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.

Prevention of disease and illness are also a big part of what wellness is all about. It is learning and developing healthy life skills so that people reduce their chances of getting sick and ward off a malady or weakness within their body, mind or spirit.

All of the effort it takes to ‘be and stay well’ pale in comparison to how it feels when you are sick and what it takes to come back from an illness. Think about this the next time you skip a workout at the gym or eat an unhealthy meal. It may help you to get motivated and make healthier choices.
